Venezuela: IIDs Thrown at Digital Newspaper Headquarters

On 23 January 2023, at approximately 0200 hours local time, 12 unidentified suspects on 6 motorcycles threw 3 improvised incendiary devices (IIDs), described as Molotov cocktails, at the headquarters of a digital newspaper in Valera in Trujillo State. No further device details have been released. Two of the IIDs hit the building causing damage to the building facade, while the third IID hit the ground, but no injuries were reported. The incident remains under investigation.

Belgium: Explosive Device Functioned Outside Building, 2 Arrested

On 23 January 2023, at approximately 0415 hours local time, local police responded to a building in Brasschaat after an explosive device was functioned at the building door, damaging the door. According to authorities, “heavy pyrotechnics were probably used,” but no further device details have been released. Police arrested a 19-year-old male from Maasmechelen and an 18-year-old Dutch woman. The incident remains under investigation.

Ohio: Commercial Explosives Discovered at Construction Company

On 19 January 2023, Mansfield Fire Department crews and Ashland County Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad technicians responded to a construction company on East Longview Avenue after an employee discovered commercial explosives, labeled as “cartridged water gel explosive,” while cleaning out a storage locker. Bomb squad technicians removed about 10 sticks of the explosives to be rendered safe with the assistance of the Ashland Fire Department.

Argentina: IIDs Thrown at Bus Yard, 7 Arrested

On 19 January 2023, local police and fire crews responded to the border of the Berazategui and Florencio Varela suburbs of Buenos Aires after seven suspects threw improvised incendiary devices (IIDs), described as Molotov cocktails, at a bus yard which houses about 120 out-of-service buses. The IIDs initiated a blaze that caused extensive damage to the buses and the bus yard. No injuries were reported, and no further device details have been released. The seven suspects were arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.

According to authorities, four heavily armed assailants, including the suicide bomber, opened fire and threw hand grenades at the outpost before the PBIED was detonated. Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Florida: Ordnance Taken to Pawn Shop

On 17 January 2023, at approximately 1500 hours local time, North Port Police Department (NPPD) officers responded to U.S. 41 and Eager Avenue after a man attempted to sell a live (unfired) 75mm ordnance from World War I at a nearby pawn shop. According to officers, the man came across the ordnance after helping a friend clean out their house. Explosive experts from NPPD, Sarasota Police Department, and MacDill Air Force Base also responded to assist, and the ordnance was transported to the base to be rendered safe.
