Kansas: IED Discovered During Vehicle Search, 1 Arrested

On 2 May 2023, at approximately 0300 hours local time, Topeka Police Department (TPD) officers arrested a 36-year-old man after discovering an IED, drugs, and a firearm in his possession following a traffic stop near the intersection of Southwest Clontarf Street and Southwest Tara Avenue. TPD’s Bomb Squad responded to assist, rendered the device safe, and removed it from the scene. No further device details have been released. The suspect was charged with criminal use of explosives among other violations. The ATF assisted in the investigation.

Missouri: IED Discovered in Suspect’s Possession, 1 Arrested

On 24 April 2023, Springfield Police Department officers responded to a report of people going through mailboxes on East Linwood and located a suspect who possessed a small IED, stolen IDs, and controlled substances. Springfield Fire Department’s bomb squad responded to assist and safely removed the device from the scene. No further device details were provided. The 20-year-old male suspect was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, trafficking in stolen identities, and unlawful possession of an illegal weapon.

Malaysia: IED Functioned Outside Shop, 3 RCIEDs Discovered

On 2 May 2023, at approximately 0600 hours local time, local police responded to a report of an IED that functioned outside a shop in Jalan Klang Lama. During the search, police collected fragments from the device and discovered three additional remote-controlled IEDs (RCIEDs) constructed with white PVC pipes. No injuries were reported, and no further device details have been released. The Fire and Rescue Department, Bomb Squad, and the Forensic Department responded to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Georgia: Pipe Bombs Seized in Residence During ATM Explosion Investigation

On 29 April 2023, at approximately 0700 hours local time, the DeKalb County Police Department (DCPD), ATF, FBI, and DCPD Bomb Squad seized several pipe bombs while executing a search warrant of a suspect’s home in Decatur. The search warrant was in connection to a 29 March 2023 pipe bomb attack on a bank ATM in North Decatur. The ATM sustained significant damage, and the suspect was able to flee with an unknown amount of cash. No further device details were released. The suspect was arrested and is awaiting official charges. The investigation is ongoing.
