Australia: IID Emplaced On Car at Home Flying Palestinian Flag

On 5 January 2024, New South Wales Police Rescue & Bomb Disposal Unit officers responded to a south Sydney home after an improvised incendiary device (IID) was emplaced on the car parked at the residence. The home was flying a Palestinian flag, and its residents were described as “pro-Palestinian.” Using a bomb disposal robot, officers inspected the device, described as a jerry can with a small amount of gasoline that had rags stuffed into it, with a disposable lighter, large bolts, and a carboard sign reading “enough take down the flag, one chance!!!!” taped to it.

Washington: C-4 Discovered in Drug Trafficking Investigation, 1 Sentenced

On 23 January 2024, a 35-year-old man from Colbert was sentenced to federal prison for possession with intent to distribute 50 grams of actual methamphetamine. The sentencing stemmed from a DEA investigation into the suspect, who was believed to be in possession of methamphetamine and heroin.

Utah: Grenades Discovered During Police Search, 1 Arrested

On 19 January 2024, St. George Police Department officers searched a residence on West 540 North in St. George as part of an investigation involving a vehicle that was reportedly stolen out of Arizona. Officers discovered ordnance including a fragmentation grenade, two flares, and two smoke grenades. The Washington County Metro Bomb Squad was called to assist. A 31-year-old male suspect was arrested and charged with one count of reckless – incendiary device and three counts of possession of a stolen vehicle.

Pennsylvania: Experimentation with Explosives Results in 1 Dead

On 24 January 2024, at approximately 0250 hours local time, neighbors heard an explosion, prompting Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) troopers to respond to a residence on Franklin Heights Road in Franklin Township. Troopers discovered a 58-year-old man dead inside the detached garage, as well as indications that an explosion occurred. Investigators believe the victim was experimenting with explosives and accidentally caused a blast. No additional details were provided. Franklin Township Police Department had previously received complaints from neighbors regarding commercial pyrotechnics.

Ohio: IID Used in Attempted Arson Attack

On 24 January 2024, at approximately 0409 hours local time, the Van Wert 911 Center received a call about a garage fire on the 900 block of Leeson Avenue. Van Wert Police Department officers responded and found evidence that someone used an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, to attempt to set the garage on fire. The IID ignited a recycling bin, but an individual inside the garage was unharmed. Surveillance video captured a suspect fleeing the scene after the attempted arson, but no one has been arrested in connection with the incident.

North Carolina: IEDs Discovered During Traffic Stop, 1 Arrested

On 22 January 2024, a Rowan County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) deputy pulled over a vehicle for expired tags in the parking lot of a gas station on Long Ferry Road in the Salisbury area, noticed the 45-year-old male driver acting nervous, and requested a K9 unit. The K9 alerted to the presence of potential illegal narcotics in the vehicle, leading to a search. RCSO deputies discovered at least four IEDs in the glove box and also found ball bearings, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.

New Mexico: Explosive Device and Suspicious Packages Discovered Across State, 1 Arrested

On 22 January 2024, at approximately 0730 hours local time, an explosion at the New Mexico Probation and Corrections building on S. Silver Avenue prompted the Deming Police Department to respond. Officers discovered an explosive device near the entrance of the facility and called the New Mexico State Police Bomb Squad to investigate. No additional device details were released. Officers identified a vehicle possibly tied to the incident and arrested a female suspect following a pursuit.

Nevada: Bomb Squad Technicians Dispose of Suspected Nitroglycerin

On 18 January 2024, Winnemucca Police Department (WPD) personnel responded to a business on West Winnemucca Boulevard for a report of suspected explosive material. At the scene, WPD requested the assistance of the Elko Bomb Squad in disposing of the explosive material, suspected to be a bottle of nitroglycerin. Bomb squad technicians removed the bottle from the premises and disposed of it via a controlled detonation in a field behind the business.

On 17 January 2024, Gordon County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a home on Pleasant Hill Road in Calhoun after receiving a report of a suspicious package. Floyd County Bomb Squad technicians responded to assist and examined the device, described as an improvised incendiary device (IID), before rendering it safe. No further device details were provided. On 18 January, deputies arrested a male suspect. The investigation is ongoing.

California: Ordnance and BMM Discovered in Home

On 17 January 2024, Imperial County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO) deputies responded to a residence on Hot Mineral Spa Road regarding a domestic violence incident. At the scene, deputies made contact with a victim and conducted a search for a 43-year-old male suspect. While searching the property, deputies discovered military ordnance, including mortar rounds, grenades, and ground burst simulators, along with bomb-making materials (BMM), which consisted of detonating cord, blasting caps, gunpowder, unspecified explosive material, and several firearms.
