On 16 May 2023, at approximately 1730 hours local time, local police responded after explosives functioned by a public bench near a children’s playground in the town of Orio, killing a man and a woman. No further details about the explosives have been released. A bomb squad and Basque police force responded to assist. According to media reporting, a preliminary investigation indicates that the explosives were concealed in a package held by one of the victims. No other injuries or damage was reported. The incident remains under investigation.
