On the night of 10 January 2024, the Washington Police Department and Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Washington shopping center for a wellness check on a 40-year-old man slumped over in his vehicle in the parking lot. While inspecting the man’s vehicle, authorities found IEDs, methamphetamines, and an unspecified weapon.
On 17 January 2024, New York Police Department officers searching an apartment in Queens found multiple unspecified explosive devices, ghost guns, and 3D printers used to develop the guns. No further device details were provided. The investigation is ongoing.

On 11 January 2024, at approximately 0709 hours local time, an explosion occurred at a home on McLain Street in Bedford. Bedford Police Department officers responded and discovered the remnants of an IED, described as a cardboard box containing a gas can with firework tubing, labeled with the Closter, New Jersey, address of a man suspected of emplacing the device. No injuries or damages were reported. The FBI searched the home of the suspect, who had been in a feud with the victim.
On 16 January 2024, a 25-year-old man pleaded guilty to possessing IEDs, bomb-making materials (BMM), and a silencer after threatening to attack a Helena high school in May 2022. The suspect was arrested on 31 May 2022, after the Helena Police Department (HPD) received a report that he possessed multiple explosive devices and firearms and had expressed a desire to commit a “Columbine-style attack” at the school with pipe bombs and other weapons.
On 14 January 2024, at approximately 1100 hours local time, an individual opened the door of their vehicle to find the interior had sustained severe burn damage. Cole County Sheriff's Office deputies responded and discovered an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a glass coffee bottle containing “rags and the smell of an accelerant.” No injuries were reported. The victim identified a female suspect and stated she had been to their house on the evening of 12 January. The suspect was contacted and admitted to functioning the IID, made from rags and household cleaners.
On 14 January 2024, at approximately 0530 hours local time, Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers responded to the 1500 block of Guilford Avenue in the Greenmount West neighborhood on reports of a pair of loud explosions near Penn Station. Upon arrival, BPD officers discovered the remnants of two explosive devices and then discovered a third device that had not functioned. The BPD Bomb Squad and ATF responded to assist, removed the device from the scene, and rendered it safe. No injuries were reported, and no device details were provided. The investigation is ongoing.
On 12 January 2024, at approximately 0900 hours local time, Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) officers responded to the 500 block of East Costilla Street on reports of loud explosions and discovered what appeared to be pieces from an explosive device. The CSPD Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team responded to assist and conducted a post-blast analysis of the scene. No device details were provided. The investigation is ongoing.
On 12 January 2024, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO), FBI, California Highway Patrol (CHP), EOD technicians from CHP and EDSP, and the CHP Valley Division Special Services Unit searched a suspect’s home after the man allegedly emplaced IEDs at various locations along roads and highways in Sacramento and El Dorado counties. The 41-year-old suspect was charged with the unlawful explosion of a destructive device, maliciously or recklessly possessing an explosive device, and the possession of a destructive device or explosives.
On 5 January 2024, a man approached a Raytown Police Department officer sitting in a car and talked with the officer before placing an IED on the car’s bumper. The IED was described as a cylinder-like object wrapped in plastic with a red fuse. The suspect acknowledged the object was an explosive and backed away from the car. Kansas City Police Department’s Bomb Squad Unit responded to the scene, determined the device was viable, and rendered it safe. The suspect was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of an explosive weapon and first-degree assault.
On 7 January 2024, Dane County Sheriff’s Office deputies discovered an explosive device in the wreckage of a suspect’s vehicle following a police chase that ended on Horseshoe Road in Iron Ridge. Deputies recovered and removed the device, described as “an older style military grenade, or facsimile” from the trunk of the wrecked vehicle. The 27-year-old male driver crashed into a ditch after fleeing a Dodge County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempting to make a traffic stop. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
