United Kingdom: Pipe Bomb Discovered on Road

On 25 January 2023, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) responded to the Antrim Road area in Newtownabbey after a pipe bomb was discovered on the road. No further device details have been released. Ammunition Technical Officers responded to the scene, determined the pipe bomb was viable, and rendered it safe via controlled detonation. The incident remains under investigation.

Italy: Explosives Used in ATM Attack

On 25 January 2023, at approximately 0330 hours local time, local Carabinieri responded to Piazza Garibaldi in Barge after unknown suspects used an explosive mixture to attack a bank ATM and fled the scene with an estimated 120,000 euros [~$130,877]. No further details about the explosives have been released. The explosion destroyed the ATM, but no injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.

Sri Lanka: IEDs, BMM Discovered in Vehicle

On 24 January 2023, Bingiriya Police stopped a truck at a checkpoint in Vilattawa and discovered IEDs, described as 89 plastic pipes filled with blasting gelatin, and bomb-making material (BMM), including 21 80-foot-long detonating cords and 900 electric detonators, hidden in a secret compartment built inside the truck. Two suspects, a 33-year-old and a 34-year-old, were arrested. The investigation is ongoing.
